Student success programs at WVU Tech help students achieve their educational goals through academic advising, tutoring and skill development workshops. These programs include the Student Success Center (SSC) on the second floor of the Robert C. Byrd Learning Resource Center and TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) in the Benedum Center. Both provide tutoring, access to a computer lab, study areas and student success seminars.

Student Success Center

The Student Success Center provides services to all WVU Tech students and saw more than 12,000 visits in its first year of operation. From academic advising for new students to free tutoring and skill-building workshops for all students, the SSC is a one-stop shop for student success.

The SSC is also a great place to study, work on a group project, grab a quick snack at the vending cafe, or hang out with friends.

TRIO Student Support Services (SSS)

TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) serves first-generation college students, Pell Grant eligible students, or students who have a documented physical or learning disability. TRIO Student Support Services also awards limited grant aid to program participants who demonstrate financial need. Visit the TRIO SSS website for more on eligibility and how to apply.

If you have any questions about the services and opportunities available to students, feel free to stop by the Student Success Center or TRIO Student Support Services.

What they’re saying about success programs at WVU Tech . . .

Amy Haddix, ‘15, Student Government Association president and peer tutor shared, “Being a tutor helps strengthen my skills in particular subjects as I review and assist fellow students.” Haddix added, “I’m in the SSC three or four nights a week and at 9 p.m. it’s not uncommon to see 10 to 20 students studying, eating or being tutored. There are tutors available at various hours to help students at whatever time is convenient.”

Janet Cunningham, biology major and peer tutor shared, “During my two years at WVU Tech, I’ve tutored in several subjects for TRIO Student Support Services. This semester, I realized I needed help in one of my classes. The Student Success Center provided me with an outstanding tutor, a great study environment and the encouragement that I needed. Everyone, even a tutor, needs help sometimes!”

Recently, Ron K. Hatfield, ‘02, spoke to students at the SSC about being fiscally responsible in “Making $ense out of ₵ents.” It was a memorable experience for all. “I have spoken to groups in three countries and in five-star resorts and there is no better facility available in which to present material. Not to overlook having a receptive, interactive audience in our sessions,” he said.
